Day-use Onsen & Lunch — Nagano

The day-use onsen and lunch plan

Order lunch and the day-use onsen is free.
From 11:00 to 16:00 the semi-private spaces and the rest room are yours at no extra charge. Enjoy a day trip with a touch of luxury, with family or with friends.

Onsen Lunch Plan

A day trip with a touch of luxury,
at a ryokan

After the onsen has settled you, lunch is waiting — made with plenty of ingredients from Takayama Village itself. The most popular of all is our standard: the Shinshu Takayama Bowl and mushroom hotpot set.

The Shinshu Takayama Bowl comes piled generously with steak. The hotpot we are known for holds more than ten kinds of mushroom picked in the mountains here, in a fermented sauce we make ourselves. Food that sits gently with a body fresh from the bath.

Onsen & Sauna

The onsen and saunas at MATSUKAWAKAN

The inner bath at MATSUKAWAKAN is open to day visitors as well. The soft water of the Yamada Onsen source warms you slowly, right through to the core. Natural light falls into the bathroom, and a quiet spreads that makes everyday life easy to forget.

This is not a large bathing complex with every facility. What it has is the real quiet, and the ease of toji (therapeutic hot-spring bathing), that only a ryokan can give you. Leave the noise of the city behind and give yourself to the plain scent of wood and the warmth of the water.

Sotoyu — Public Baths

A round of the public bathhouses,
feeling the character of Yamada Onsen

There are two public bathhouses (sotoyu) within walking distance of MATSUKAWAKAN. Both are old communal bathhouses drawing on the Yamada Onsen source.

Sotoyu I | Takinoyu

A special communal bathhouse long used by the people who live here. It is not built for tourists, and the plain, unaffected feel of it is exactly the appeal. Drop in, sink into the water — time that sits somewhere between everyday life and a journey. Day-use guests are welcome here as well, though it may occasionally be closed for cleaning. Overnight guests can always bathe there.

Sotoyu II | Oyu

The central bath of Yamada Onsen, in use since the Edo period. A bathhouse with real history, loved by people here for generations. The building is simple, but the softness and the warmth of the source come through.

* Charged separately as an option: ¥300

Forest & Tenku Sauna

The Forest Sauna and the Tenku Sauna

The Forest Sauna from outside, wrapped in deep green woodland
Forest Sauna

Forest Sauna

This is nothing like a city sauna surrounded by man-made things. Birdsong, the sound of trees moving in the wind, light coming through the leaves. Soft earth and moss underfoot, and the deep green of the forest in front of you.

Step into the sauna room, pour a slow löyly, and the heat works gently into the core of you while the scent of wood and the pulse of the place seem to travel through your whole body. When you come out, there is a natural cold-water bath fed by the water of Takayama Village. Even the cold striking your skin feels good. Take a deep breath and your five senses open of their own accord.

The private Tenku Sauna

Sauna room: a room rich with the scent of wood, built with hinoki cypress throughout. A HARVIA tower stove and radiant heat from stone warm you properly from the core. Through the small window, a fine view of the mountain ridgelines and the sky.

Cold-water bath: filled with the water of Takayama Village. Guests say it is soft and gentle on the skin. Properly cold, and ideal for reaching totonoi.

Cooling off in the open air: from a private cooling space, Matsukawa Gorge and the sky are yours alone. The night sky here has been ranked third in the world. In autumn, the view is one of Japan’s 100 best autumn-leaf spots.
