YAMADA ONSEN · NAGANO
Day-use Onsen — Nagano
Free-flowing hot spring water at The TOJI.ba MATSUKAWAKAN.
If you are looking for a day-use onsen in Nagano, come to MATSUKAWAKAN. Natural hot spring water straight from the source, and the settled calm of totonoi.
Day-use Onsen · No Reservation
The inner bath at MATSUKAWAKAN is open to day visitors as well. The soft water of the Yamada Onsen source warms you slowly, right through to the core. Natural light falls into the bathroom, and a quiet spreads that makes everyday life easy to forget.
This is not a large bathing complex with every facility. What it has is the real quiet, and the ease of toji (therapeutic hot-spring bathing), that only a ryokan can give you. Leave the noise of the city behind and give yourself to the plain scent of wood and the warmth of the water.
You are just as welcome to come for the bath alone as for the bath and lunch together. Please drop in whenever you like.

Sotoyu — Public Baths
There are two public bathhouses (sotoyu) within walking distance of MATSUKAWAKAN. Both are old communal bathhouses drawing on the Yamada Onsen source.
The central bath of Yamada Onsen, in use since the Edo period. A bathhouse with real history, loved by people here for generations. The building is simple, but the softness and the warmth of the source come through.
A local communal bathhouse long used by the people who live here. It is not built for tourists, and the plain, unaffected feel of it is exactly the appeal. Drop in, sink into the water — time that sits somewhere between everyday life and a journey. Day-use guests are welcome here as well, though it may occasionally be closed for cleaning. Overnight guests can always bathe there.

Private Rest
Day visitors to the baths may also rest in the semi-private space between 11:00 and 16:00 (guests having lunch have priority).
After the onsen or the sauna, take your time in a quiet room.
Rental
Forgot something? You can rent it. So that you can arrive empty-handed and still enjoy the day-use onsen and sauna, MATSUKAWAKAN keeps a range of items for hire.
| Face towel | ¥150 (free for overnight guests) |
|---|---|
| Bath towel | ¥200 |
Guests using the sauna are asked to wear a swimsuit and a sauna poncho. Anything you need can be rented on the day, so please just ask.
Order lunch and the day-use onsen is free. Take your time over the flavours of Shinshu and the hot spring in a semi-private rest room.
Stay the night and the inner bath is open until 24:00. The Forest Sauna is included free, and 20:00–23:00 becomes time for overnight guests only. You can compare the difference with day use in figures.
Reservation
Settle, be healed, be filled. A day at the MATSUKAWAKAN baths does not stop at “just a hot spring”.
One piece of luxury for one day of your life. This is an experience you will find nowhere else.
