Onsen — Yamada Hot Spring, Nagano

A hidden hot-spring inn in Takayama Village, Nagano
The free-flowing onsen of The TOJI.ba MATSUKAWAKAN

At MATSUKAWAKAN, an inn in Nagano with a private open-air bath, you can spend time healing both mind and body — in hot spring water that flows free straight from the source, in a quiet space surrounded by nature.

Private Open-air Bath

The private open-air bath, Gokumu-no-Yu

Gokumu-no-Yu is a fully private open-air bath. By day it is wrapped in the mountains of Shinshu; by night it is held by the stars and the silence — a bath made for settling into nature.

Overnight guests can reserve it at check-in. No other guests will be there at the same time, so the luxury of that private hour is yours alone.

Features

  • For overnight guests only, fully private (one group at a time / reservation required)
  • Morning, evening and night each bring a different view and a different air
  • A special hour with a moon-viewing drink, under the light of the moon

* For hours and how to reserve, please ask at the front desk or through our official LINE.

Indoor Bath

The inner bath, open to everyone

Inside MATSUKAWAKAN there is a shared inner bath (uchiyu), open to overnight guests and day visitors alike. Fed from the source at Yamada Onsen, the water wraps the body softly, and the warmth stays with you long after you get out.

Daylight comes through the large windows by day; at night the room is wrapped in quiet. The bath changes its face with the hour, and that too belongs to MATSUKAWAKAN alone.

Using the bath

Day visitors11:00–20:00 (no reservation needed)
LunchLunch in the inn is available as well (Shinshu gibier, seasonal mushroom dishes and more)

Sotoyu — Public Baths

A round of the public bathhouses, feeling the character of Yamada Onsen

There are two public bathhouses (sotoyu) near MATSUKAWAKAN, both within walking distance. Each draws on the Yamada Onsen source, and both are communal bathhouses of the old kind.

Sotoyu I

Oyu

The central bath of Yamada Onsen, running since the Edo period. A historic public bathhouse that local people have loved for many years. Simply built, but you can feel the softness and the warmth of the source.

Inside Takinoyu, a public bathhouse

Sotoyu II

Takinoyu

A local communal bathhouse long used by the people who live here. Nothing about it is arranged for tourists, and that plain, unpretentious feel is what makes it good. Drop in on a whim and sink into the water — time that sits somewhere between ordinary life and being away from it. Day-use guests are welcome here as well, though it may occasionally be closed for cleaning. Overnight guests can always bathe there.

Walking from bathhouse to bathhouse at Yamada Onsen A communal bathhouse of the old kind

Walking slowly through the old hot-spring streets of Takayama Village, bathhouse to bathhouse. That, too, is one of the real pleasures of a stay at MATSUKAWAKAN.
