What to bring to the sauna,
and what to rent on the day

2026.08.23

At The TOJI.ba MATSUKAWAKAN, swimsuits are worn in the saunas. This article covers only what to bring and what you can rent on the day.

Many people put off booking a sauna because they are not sure what to pack. So we simply separate what you need from what you can borrow when you arrive.

Swimsuits, ponchos and towels can all be rented on site. That way you can turn up empty-handed and still enjoy the sauna.

Swimsuits are worn in every sauna

In the saunas here, everyone wears a swimsuit. So you will need one to go in, or you can rent a swimsuit on the day.

Because everyone wears a swimsuit, partners, friends and children can go into the sauna together. It is an easy way to share the time with the people you came with.

The order in which you use the sauna is explained on a separate page, How to use the sauna. This article stays with just the packing and the rentals.

Same-day rentals and their prices

Even if you do not own a swimsuit, you can rent one on the spot. A sauna poncho and towels can be rented in the same way.

The items you can rent on the day, with their prices, are shown below. Day guests coming just for the sauna can gather everything here.

ItemPrice
Sauna poncho680 yen
Swimsuit500 yen
Face towel150 yen
Bath towel200 yen

Face towels are free for staying guests, while day guests rent one for 150 yen. Prices are subject to change; please check before you visit.

For day-use sauna prices and booking, see the Day-use sauna page. If you are unsure what to pack, start there.

Handy extras: a sauna hat and a drink

What you really need for the sauna is a change of clothes and a towel. With those two things, you are ready to go in.

Beyond that, a sauna hat and a drink to stay hydrated make it more comfortable. Bring them along if you would like.

Towels and sauna hats can be rented or bought on site. So even if you forget yours, you can sort it out when you arrive.

Day-use saunas must be booked in advance

If you come just for the sauna, you need to book in advance. Once your date is set, it is best to reserve early.

The Forest Sauna has two cabins. Day use is 2,300 yen (tax included) per person, in one of four two-hour slots.

The Tenku Sauna sits 1,000m up and is booked one group at a time. Day use is from 9,800 yen (tax included) per group, or 3,000 yen for staying guests, each for 120 minutes.

For both saunas, swimsuits and ponchos can be rented on the day. When you book, it helps to plan what to pack at the same time.

Guests with tattoos are welcome

All of the baths here are open to guests with tattoos, and that includes the saunas. There is no need to cover a tattoo.

When you use the public bathhouses in the village, please follow the notices posted on site. The rules can differ from place to place.

If anything about packing or booking is unclear, it is gathered on the Frequently asked questions page. Please check there before you visit.
